History of National Dress
Overtime, the national dress of Dominica has changed significantly, as some would say. It was previously worn by freed slaves, but later worn as Dominica's independence wear. Many new trends were adopted and added to the dress throughout the years, such as, the African custom of lifting the skirt and flinging it heedlessly over the arm became popular and allowed a partial view of the petticoat. This is still practiced at several cultural events and pageants in Dominica.
Fashion has become so important over the years, that a system of dress was developed where matching colors was an important step in the process. Dominica has a rich cultural background which will certainly inspire and entice anyone to stay here. The people are proud of their heritage and wear their striking and astonishing colors with pride.
