Political Life
February of 1964 Honourable E.C Loblack, now a nominated member of the house, urged the introduction of a social security system. To his surprise this motion was seconded by the leader of the opposition. Mr. Stevens and the chief ministers spoke defensively and when the vote was taken, to much surprise, the the bill was passed.
Sadly, in September of 1962 Mrs. Phyllis Shand Allfrey was expelled from the Dominica Labor Party, causing Mr Loblack to fall out with the hierarchy of the Dominica Labor Party, causing him to grow extremely critical of the government. On Thursday 2nd April 1964 Mr. Loblack was expelled from membership of the ruling Dominica Labor Party on grounds that he refused to speak on party platforms and intends to stand as a candidate, with or without party support, at the next election. Following this Mr. Loblack immediately stated that he never declined to speak on a Labor Party platform.
Mr. Loblack later explained through the “Dear Editor” column in the Saturday, April 11 1964 issue of The Herald, the true reason for his expulsion. He stated that the very first day Mrs. Allfrey was expelled his expulsion was in the air, simply because he protested against them the way that they were deciding her case, because they did not allow her to hear the decision of the Council.
