Introduction

The West Indies Federation began on 3rd January 1958 and ended on 31st May 1962. This Federation was a political union which comprised of British Colonies such as Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Monserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent.

The Federation was established by the British Caribbean Federation Act of 1956 and aimed to establish a political union among the Caribbean Countries however it failed due to political conflicts. Saying this, like any organization founded under the United Kingdom it was ruled by Queen Elizabeth II, who was the Head of State, and under her rule she commissioned Baron Hailes to the colonies where he would serve as her representative to the Crown.

Baron Hailes was given the title ‘Governor General’ and Sir Grantley Adams who was the Premier of Barbados was appointed as Prime Minister. The West Indies Federation entailed that each country should appoint a prime minister, who was elected by the forty-five (45) members of the House of Representatives as well as a cabinet made up of the newly elected Prime minister and ten elected members of his chose.
