Political Parties Then and Now
Now, the Dominica Labor Party is seen as the most lucrative and authoritative political party in the Country, as well as the eldest. It is important to now understand how this party commenced. It was founded by Phyllis Shand Allfrey and Emmanuel Christopher Loblack. In 1961, they were elected to make rational decisions involving the country’s laborious dilemmas in a time where there was much confusion going on. They obtained seven seats out of eleven as well as ten seats in the following elections in 1966.
Also, the party took over once again in 1970 retrieving eight seats and sixteen out of twenty-one in the 1975 elections. In 1963 they decided to send protest messages to the Governor General and the Prime Minister in regards to the disengagement of allowances for federal ministers, this occurred in 1963.
Unfortunately, in 1980 the party lost the elections to the Freedom Party, surrendering all their seats. But in 1985 the party regained five seats, lost one seat in 1990 and gained one extra seat in 1995. Additionally, the 2000 elections was a complete success because the Dominica Labor Party once again gained power with ten seats out of twenty-one.
The new Prime Minister was now Roosevelt Douglas but was soon replaced by Prime Minister Pierre Charles due to the unfortunate passing of Prime Minister Roosevelt on October 1st 2000. Moreover, on 6th January 2004 the passing of Prime Minister Pierre Charles took place as a result of heart problems. Because of this Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit took power and won the party twelve seats in 2005 and eighteen seats in 2009.
