Dominica Freedom Party
Continually, the Freedom Party is another legendary and reactionary political party in Dominica founded in 1968 by Dame Eugenia Charles. Dame Eugenia Charles led the party to victory in 1980 where she became Prime Minister of Dominica until her retirement in 1995. She led the party from 1972 to 1995.
Dame Eugenia Charles was succeeded by Brian Alleyne but lost the 1995 elections by the United Workers Party. In 1996 Charles Savarin became the leader of the party and the Prime Minister appointed him as foreign minister. On 31 January 2000 the party only retrieved two seats and on March 5th 2005 the party lost the elections without obtaining a seat. The Freedom Party decided to join forces with the United Workers Party with the intentions to form a government of their own. Today, Michael Astaphans is the new political leader of the Dominica Freedom Party.
Again, another political party who has been elected to represent Dominican is The United Workers Party. This party can be described as paramount to Dominica’s history receiving three seats in the 2009 elections. It was founded by several members including Edison James, Julius Timothy, Norris Prevost, Dennis La Bassiere and more. In 1990 the party got six out of twenty-one seats and eleven seats in 1995 aided by Edison James who became the Prime Minister. But, in the 2000 elections the party only received nine seats and lost one seat on May 5th 2005 with James continuing to lead to party.
Afterwards, James stepped down in December 2005 as the political leader of the party and was replaced by Earl Williams. Because Julis Timothy wanted to become the leader of the party he joined the Dominica Labor Party as a result of Earl Williams taking that title resulting in the party losing another seat. In addition, the United Workers Party received only four seats in the 2009 elections. Edison James was re-elected as the Political Leader of the Party in 2012.
